Volleyball Defeats LMU in Straight Sets; Host USF on Saturday at 1 pm

Winning in straight sets Santa Clara won 3-0 over LMU on Thursday night.  Set scores were 25-21, 25-18 and 25-23.  Santa Clara is 8-11 and 3-5 in the WCC and LMU is 10-11 and 3-5 in the WCC.  Santa Clara hosts USF on Sat., Oct. 22 at 1 pm in its DIG PINK match to raise funds and awareness for breast cancer research.

"The team stayed focus for all three sets tonight. I hope they can take this experience and bring it to the next match vs. USF on Saturday.  Kayla Lommori matched up well against the Lions defense. Her swings were very confident and that really helped us," said Bronco head coach Jon Wallace.  "Bridget O'Hara had a good match and dug a lot of balls.  Dana Knudsen came up big at the end when we needed her and had no errors tonight.  Alyssa Anderson also set a really nice match tonight for the first time running the 5-1."

Santa Clara scored 51 kills (11 e, 105 att.), hitting .381.  They  collected 50 digs, 48 assists, three service aces, eight service errors and two team blocks.  LMU scored 38 kills (12 e, 106 att.), hitting .245.  They  collected 41 digs, 35 assists, two service aces, eight service errors and 4.5 team blocks. 

Individually, Santa Clara was led by Kayla Lommori's 14 kills, hitting .571 (2e, 21 att.).  Kaleigh Durket (.280) and Dana Knudsen (.667) both scored 10 kills each.  Katherine Douglas had nine kills (.250) with eight digs.  Bridget O'Hara had 15 digs for the Broncos and Alyssa Anderson scored 44 assists and eight digs.

For the Lions no one had double figure kills.  Emily Cheek scored nine kills, hitting .533.  Alyse Hensley had seven kills as did Jasmine Rankins.  Ashley Maxfeldt had 18 assists and Olivia Bailey added 17.  Betsi Metter scored a match-high 18 digs. 

Santa Clara won set one 25-21. Anders and Douglas scored back-to-back kills to tie it up 3-3.  Douglas' kill off the block gave the Broncos a one point lead.  LMU rallied to scored three before Knudsen's kill made it 6-5 LMU.  LMU tied it up 6-6 with a kill off the Bronco block.  The team's traded points on kills as LMU went up 9-7.  A team block by Lommori and Anders, an LMU error, a Durket kill off the block and another LMU error gave the Broncos an 11-9 lead.  A long rally was finished off successfully with a Douglas kill to give SCU a 12-10 lead. Trading points, Durket and Douglas scored back-to-back kills to give the Broncos a 14-11 lead when LMU whistled for time.  Douglas blew a kill down the line coming out of the timeout before LMU silenced the three-point run by SCU, 15-12 SCU.  Knudsen's kill gave SCU a side-out.  A Douglas service ace and a hitting error by LMU made it 18-12 Broncos.  After the team's traded points, LMU whistled for time again with SCU up 19-13.  Lommori's kill off the block twice between a Lions kill gave the Broncos a 21-16 lead.  The Lions blocked Durket's attempt inbounds for a side-out, but then served their ball out to put SCU up 22-17.  A Lions kill and a Durket hitting error made it 22-19 Broncos. Timeout Santa Clara.  Douglas hit down the line for a score.  LMU scored two of the next three, but served it out of bounds to give SCU a 25-21 set one win.  Douglas hit .500 with six kills in 10 attempts.  Anderson had 14 assists.  Litara Keil and Alyse Hensley both had four kills each and Olivia Bailey collected nine assists.  SCU hit .353 with 17 kills (5e, 34 att.).  LMU hit .290 with 13 kills (4e, 31 att.).

Santa Clara won set two 25-18.  Lommori opened set three with three straight kills and a kill by Anders off the LMU block put SCU up 4-0.  After a Bronco net call, Lommori's fourth kill in the set gave the Broncos a side-out and Anders kill to the back row made it 6-1 Broncos.  A kill by Anders tagged an LMU player in the face to put SCU up 7-4.  LMU scored three straight kills to tie it up 7-7.  A hitting error by Hensley gave SCU the ball.  Trading points, SCU went up 10-8 on a Lions error.  Lommori's kill down the line put SCU up 12-9.  Back-to-back Lion points were followed by a kill by Anders.  An Anderson service and a Durket kill made it 15-11. Timeout Lions. A team block by Lommori and Anders put SCU up 15-12.  Trading points, Durket and Knudsen hit back-to-back kills when LMU whistled for time with SCU up 18-13.  A ball handling error by Kenna Crouse was followed by a Bronco in the net, 19-14 Broncos.  Durket's kill gave SCU a side-out.  Trading points, LMU served the ball in the net to collect its four service error of the match.  LMU scored four straight when Wallace called for time, up 23-18.  Knudsen's kill off the block and a hitting error by LMU gave the Broncos 25-18.  Lommori's seven kills in set two led the Broncos.  Emily Cheek had four for the Lions.  SCU hit .452 with 17 kills (3e, 31 att.).  LMU hit .118 with nine kills (5e, 34 att.). 

Set three was won by SCU 24-23. The teams tied it up three times before LMU took a 6-4 lead.  Trading points, the Lions moved forward 8-5.  A dump by Anderson, Lommori's 11th kill of the night and a Lion hitting error tied it up 8-8.  Lommori's kill off the block was followed by an LMU kill off the Bronco block to tie it up 9-9.  The two teams tied it up four times.  LMU took a two-point lead on back-to-back kills by the middle blocker.  After an LMU service error, SCU scored two to tie it up 16-16.  A Douglas service ace and an LMU error put SCU up 18-16 for SCU's fourth straight point.  Timeout Lions.   Trading points, Knudsen's eighth kill of the match put SCU up 19-17.  LMU scored three of the next four points to tie the set 20-20.   Timeout Broncos.  LMU was called for being in the net and then hit the ball wide to put SCU up 22-20. Timeout LMU.   Crouse's cross court kill was followed by one by Durket, 23-21 Broncos.  Cheek's kill was followd by a huge swat by Knudsen to the back row.  LMU hit a cross court kill after a long rally made it 24-23 Broncos. Timeout Santa Clara.  Knudsen picked up her 10th kill of the night with no errors to give Santa Clara a 25-23 set win. SCU hit .350 with 17 kills (3e, 40 att.).  LMU hit .317 with 16 kills (3e, 41 att.).
