Women's Water Polo Downs Fresno Pacific in Double Overtime

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Saturday's non-conference matchup between the Santa Clara University women's water polo team and visiting Fresno Pacific couldn't have been any closer, with the result taking two overtimes to determine, and the host Broncos coming away with a 16-15 double overtime decision at Sullivan Aquatic Center.

Neither team ever led by more than two goals during the six-period affair. The game featured 12 tie scores and three lead changes. Santa Clara (8-14) had one-goal leads with less than a minute remaining in both the fourth period and the first overtime, but Fresno Pacific (9-12) was able to tie it both times with only seconds remaining.

The Sunbirds pulled even at 13-13 with 35 seconds left in the fourth period. FPU had an opportunity to win it late after forcing a Broncos turnover, but it wasn't able to get a shot off before the buzzer sounded the end of regulation. They did it again in the first overtime, tying the game at 14-14 with a goal from Alexandria Jasso with only 18 seconds remaining.

The Santa Clara defense stepped up in the second overtime, keeping Fresno Pacific from scoring until there were only 33 seconds left. Meanwhile, the Broncos got goals from Elle Frederickson and Maddie Clough to go up for good at 16-14.

Fredrickson led all players with five goals. Lauren Baglietto scored four, and Halley Seed scored two. Francesca Moynihan, Maddie Clough, Sydney Maccabe, Lauren Voss and Harper Daniels all scored one goal each. Liyara Senadheera and Georgia Lewis both played in goal for the Broncos, with each making seven saves.

The Broncos next host Golden Coast Conference opponent and No. 25-ranked San Diego State at 4:30 p.m. on Friday. Fans can find all live coverage links on SantaClaraBroncos.com.
