Q & A With Bronco Sophomore Calvin Johnson

Q & A With Bronco Sophomore Calvin Johnson

Sophomore Calvin Johnson is coming off of a standout freshman season. The Morton, Texas native led the team in three-point shots with forty-one, and proved to be a steady performer in the backcourt. The Broncos recently opened training camp and Johnson took some time out to catch up with SantaClaraBroncos.com.

How have the first few practices gone? The season is going well; we are just practicing and incorporating the two new freshmen into our system. We are playing with each other, adjusting and becoming a team, becoming one. We are also trying to improve and get our conditioning better for this season.

Who do you think is the Broncos biggest competition in the WCC? I am not sure; it should not really matter as long as we come out and play our hardest. We all should be playing hard and not think any team is unbeatable. We have our full squad back with Tristan (Parham) and Brandon (Rohe) coming back; while they are not completely healed, they are back practicing and we are just getting ready to begin the season all together.

What is your favorite thing to do off the court? I love spending time with my friends and teammates; overall I am just trying to enjoy life and do as much as I can.

Who are your favorite singer and actor? I am not sure I have a favorite; I really like most things and am pretty easy going. My favorite genre of music would have to be R&B. I really enjoy listening and singing along with songs. As for my favorite actor I really like movies by Jamie Foxx and Denzel Washington. They are two very good actors and I like the movies they star in. Overall I just do not have a favorite anything, I really like everything.

So you have been trying acting, how is that going? I am not currently enrolled in any acting classes, but this past summer I was in a Shakespeare class. Part of the class required us to perform The Tempest for inmates at San Quentin prison. In the play my character was Ferdinand, a man trying to woo or impress another character named Miranda. I really enjoy acting and learned this last year when I took an acting class for non-majors. There I got acquainted with it and decided to take this Shakespeare class over the summer. The non-majors class was open to anyone, but this was more exclusive and I had never done anything like it before.

You said what your favorite thing is, what would you say is your least favorite thing? There is not anything I just do not like, nothing that I just despise. Like I said before I am a pretty easy going guy who just wants to enjoy life.

Anything you enjoy that would surprise people? I think I am a pretty straightforward guy, but one thing that I really do enjoy is singing. That would be another thing I really enjoy doing off the court, too. People may be surprised that I do that a lot and could see myself maybe doing that or something in theater arts after college.

Any final thoughts? I am looking forward to this season with great anticipation of success. It is going to be a great season, we are very competitive and we hate to lose.
