SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Junior forward Mitch Henke scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Santa Clara to an 83-51 win over Holy Names on Tuesday.
Sean Denison added 12 points and 7-foot center Josh Higgins had 10 points and seven rebounds for the Broncos, who had 11 players score and led by as many as 38 points in the second half.
Marshall Hartman scored 14 points to pace Holy Names, an NAIA school. The Hawks (1-4) shot just 34.6 percent for the game, missed 13 of their first 14 3-point attempts and committed 19 turnovers.
Henke went 4-for-6 from the floor and added four assists while posting the first double-double of his career.
Denison, who has missed 23 games over the past two seasons due to foot injuries, made five of his first seven shots from the floor to pace a Santa Clara team that shot 57.6 percent in the first half. Higgins went 5-for-7 in his first game for the Broncos after sitting out all of 2005 following his transfer from Western Kentucky.
The Broncos, who went 13-16 a year ago, never trailed and dominated the Hawks at both ends of the court, finishing with a 49-22 edge in rebounding.
Santa Clara broke the game open with a 23-2 run in the first half. Sophomore Calvin Johnson started the onslaught with a pair of 3-pointers, and Danny Pariseau finished it with a pair of free throws to put the Broncos ahead 36-9.
The Broncos return to action on Saturday, Nov. 18 as they host the University of Utah Utes at the Leavey Center. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. PT.
