Men’s Golf Sees Briones Claim Santa Clara Championship; Keskari Wins in Germany

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Carlos Briones (pictured right) birdied the final two holes to comeback and win the 86th 2012 Ernie Pieper Santa Clara County Championship by one shot over the weekend. The Santa Clara University freshman to-be in 2012-13, capped off the Championship by sinking a 15-foot birdie putt on the final hole following an improbable approach shot, requiring him to cut the ball 30 yards, under and around a tree.

Played at San Jose Country Club, Briones trailed Justin Suh by three shots going into the final round, but a closing score of 67 gave Briones the victory. His round also included a near hole-in-one on No. 7 and a tap-in birdie on No. 12 – the most difficult hole on the course.

A product of San Leandro and Moreau Catholic High School, Briones became the youngest winner of the San Francisco City Golf Championship at age 14. He also won the Oakland City Amateur Championship as a 16-year old. The win at San Jose Country Club was especially sweet for Briones, who had missed significant time recently with a wrist injury.

Briones posted rounds of (71-71-67) and entered final-round play tied with current SCU sophomore Scott Lowe in sixth. Lowe shot rounds of (72-70-72), which allowed him to place fifth, giving the Broncos two top 5 finishers in the storied event.

Another incoming Bronco, Martin Keskari of Germany, won his home state's Hessische Vierermeisterschaften two-ball event with teammate Jonas Voltz. The young pair used a five-under par final round to win by three shots. Additionally, Keskari's club team dominated the Frankfurter Golf Club event, going 11-1 on the opening day, then winning 8-4 on day two.
