PULLMAN, Wash. – Eighth-year Santa Clara University men's golf coach Rob Miller believes his current freshman class is one of the best he's ever brought to the Mission Campus. All seven of his current players, including four highly touted newcomers, are in action this week at Washington State's Itani Quality Homes Men's Golf Collegiate.
"The conditions have been tough, windy and cool up here," said Miller about the weather on the Palouse Monday. "Very difficult opening tournament for these freshmen. Martin (Keskari) has played solid, just hasn't made as many putts as he'd like. He hit 14 greens this morning, which is tremendous ball striking out here."
Keskari (Frankfurt, Germany) has extensive international tournament experience stemming from his time playing on the German Junior National Team. He was the Broncos' top finisher after the first round, posting a four-over par 76 – good for 11th overall in the 68-man field.
"Everyone is basically a bit startled by these conditions," added Miller. "It's a grind out there. The first time playing 36 holes of college golf, in these conditions, it's a grind. Bobby (Monaco) is more used to it and that has shown. Bobby bounced back from a slow start and is playing well. I like how these guys are competing, they are going after it out there."
Monaco (Eugene, Ore.) - pictured above - and junior classmate Scott Lowe (Calgary, Alberta) are the only two upperclassmen on the SCU roster. Monaco posted an opening-round 77 to also place among the top 20 after Monday's morning round.
Three of Santa Clara's top four golfers after round one are true freshman, playing in their first-ever college event.
