PULLMAN, Wash. – The Santa Clara
University men's golf team had an outstanding finishing round at
Washington State's Itani Quality Homes Collegiate tournament on
Tuesday. The Broncos shot a collective 291 – a 21-stroke
improvement from SCU's score in round two.
"We are optimistic about the year; we can all shoot pretty low and
there is no doubt we'll go out and have more rounds like this,"
said SCU true freshman Drew Miller,
who had five birdies and 10 pars Tuesday to post a 2-under 70.
Miller (pictured) was one of four Bronco freshmen making their
college debuts this week.
"I hit the ball well, missed a couple of short putts but really
limited any mistakes," Miller added. "The team feel right now is
great. It was good yesterday to get all the jitters out of the way,
plus the wind died down a bit today, which helped. This was a solid
course and event to figure out what we need to work on and it will
absolutely just keep getting better from here."
Martin
Keskari came out and had 15 pars in his first-ever college
round Monday morning. The freshman from Frankfurt, Germany, shot
rounds of 76, 78 and 74 to tie for 19th overall on the
individual leaderboard. He was SCU's top finisher, just one shot
better than San Lorenzo native Carlos
Briones, who birdied three of five holes to close out the event
en route to a final-round 72.
"We were determined to finish strong and I'm really happy with how
the guy's approached things today," said SCU head coach Rob Miller.
"Carlos is a very good putter, and will find his swing as the year
goes on. Martin hits the ball long and once he starts making putts
he will post even better scores as well."
The Broncos have consistently been ranked among the nation's top
80 teams during Miller's eight-year tenure as head coach and the
young talent should get the team back in the mix for a possible
postseason run in the coming years. SCU finished the event seventh
in the 11-team field following Tuesday's final-round 291
(+3).
