Bronco Men's Golf Reloads for New Season; Tournament Play Begins Sept. 10-11

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University men's golf team released its 2012-2013 schedule today. The program welcomes one of its best-ever recruiting classes, adding to the anticipation of its debut event September 10-11 at Washington State University's Palouse Collegiate Invitational.

Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller announced the signing of four outstanding prep players in November. Those true freshmen join juniors Scott Lowe (Calgary, Alberta Canada) and Bobby Monaco (Eugene, Ore.), along with sophomore Brett Komoto (Honolulu, Hawaii), on a revamped Broncos roster.

Competing for immediate playing-time will be Bay Area product Carlos Briones (San Leandro, Calif.) – winner of the 86th 2012 Ernie Pieper Santa Clara County Championship this summer – international stars Martin Keskari (Hesse, Germany) and Angelo Jose 'Gio' Gandionco (Cebu, Philippines), and Drew Miller (Thousand Oaks, Calif.), who has enjoyed recent success on the Future Collegiate World Tour (FCWT).

"Since we know we will be playing at least three underclassmen in every event, the schedule is spread out evenly throughout the (fall and spring) seasons," said Miller, now in his eighth-year as head coach. "We have tournaments about two weeks apart to make it easier on the new players to manage their time, and it progresses from easier to more difficult throughout the year."

SCU will play the majority of its fall schedule during the month of October, highlighted by the Third-Annual Cabo Collegiate in San Jose del Cabo, Mexico, an event hosted by Santa Clara, October 14-16. Competition against another national-field will wrap up the fall campaign at The Pacific Invitational in Stockton, Calif., October 29-31.

"We will see some tough teams in the fall but a lot more in the spring," added Miller. "By then, the freshmen will have some experience under their belt and should be better prepared to compete against some of the top-ranked teams we will see later in the year."

The spring season is always capped off by the West Coast Conference Championship, held this year at Gold Mountain Golf Club in Bremerton, Wash., April 15-17. Events in Arizona and Southern California dominate the seven-event spring slate, which also includes a trip to Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in early March.
