SCU’s Cabo Collegiate Loaded with Nationally-Ranked Programs

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Santa Clara University men's golf team will host the 3rd-annual Cabo Collegiate, held at Golf Digest's top-rated course in Mexico, Querencia Golf Club, this coming Sunday through Tuesday, Oct. 14-16.

Santa Clara's strong start to the 2012-13 season, which included an impressive fifth-place showing at SMC's Invitational in late September has moved the Broncos back into the nation's top 100. SCU junior Scott Lowe (Calgary, Alberta) tied for second in that event, finishing one shot off the lead at 3-under par.

Lowe and his teammates will tee it up against a stacked 12-team field in Mexico, that includes four of the nation's top 50 programs: Florida State University, St. Mary's College, the University of Kentucky and the University of Mississippi.

"The team is looking forward to the trip. We will miss one of our top performers so far this year, Carlos Briones, who can't make this trip but will be back for our last event of the fall in Stockton later this month," said SCU head men's golf coach Rob Miller. "The rest of the guys have been busy with practice and school but I think are well-prepared and eager to get back into competition. The finish at the last event has given them the confidence that they can hold their own with anyone."

The absence of Briones (San Lorenzo, Calif.), one of the top amateur players in the Bay Area, opens up a spot in the lineup for rookie classmate Gio Gandionco (Cebu City, Philippines). Briones and Gandionco are part of an outstanding freshman class that also includes Martin Keskari (Frankfurt, Germany) and Drew Miller (Thousand Oaks, Calif.) pictured. Talented junior returner Bobby Monaco (Eugene, Ore.) rounds out the five-man team, led by Lowe, that Miller plans to enter in the event beginning on Sunday.

"This tournament is good for Santa Clara golf because we are hosting a first-class event that reflects well on our program," Miller said about the Cabo Collegiate. "It also gives us some leverage when trying to get into better events and improve our tournament schedule. In turn, a good tournament schedule helps with recruiting. Good players want to play against good competition."
