Halftime Adjustments Allow Santa Clara to Rally Past SMC

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Trailing at the half, Santa Clara made the right adjustments to score twice after the intermission and beat local rival St. Mary's 2-1 Friday night at Stevens Stadium.

Precision passes inside the box allowed Edson Cardona to score the game-winner with 10 minutes left. Santa Clara (6-7; 1-1 WCC) had tied it up immediately after halftime, when Satoshi "Yoshi" Chaffin (pictured) set up true freshman Andres Jimenez for his first collegiate goal.

"At halftime we identified the first thing, and that is, don't get outworked," said head coach Cameron Rast. "(St. Mary's) showed they wanted it more, pressing for the game. They outworked us in the first half and that should never happen."

St. Mary's (4-8-1; 1-1 WCC) was aiming to win its first two WCC matches, after getting by Pacific last weekend. The Gaels benefited from an own goal midway through the first half on a deep throw-in that glanced off an SCU defender and rolled in untouched.

"Give (St. Mary's) a lot of credit," said Rast. "They were grinding, and they made it difficult. But once we responded with our energy, getting that part right, then it was a matter of, can we solve the tactical problem that they were presenting? And we did, multiple times getting our first goal off of it and our second goal off of it."

Jimenez, one of three Bronco freshmen out of nearby Gilroy High School, filled in nicely for injured star Carlos Delgadillo up front. Senior Matt Escobar played despite a hamstring injury to take on an important role in SCU's back line. Dylan Autran and Alfred "Alfie" Edmonds provided the passing for Cardona's game-winner.

The Broncos are back on their home field in Stevens Stadium Sunday afternoon, when they take on Pacific (1-11; 0-2 WCC), who dropped a lopsided 3-0 decision to USF Friday night in San Francisco.
