San Jose, Calif.- After two rounds of the San Jose State Spartan Invitational, the Santa Clara women's golf team is in a great position for where they wanted to be this far into the tournament. Out of the 15 teams, the Broncos are ranked 13th, but are tied for 10th heading into the final round.

Without their freshman sensation Miki Ueoka for the weekend, Katie Sharpe has stepped up into the role of front-runner on the team. Sharpe had the low round for the team with a second round score of 76 after her first round 79. She is currently tied for 29th.

Corey Utsurogi was her normal, consistent self, shooting rounds of 80 and 77, good for second on the team and tied for 35th overall.

Jamie Nonaka is currently tied for 41st in the tournament. Her scores of 80 and 78 put her third on the team.

Jenny Nelson paced the Broncos with a team best 78 in the first round. Her second round score of 82 leaves her tied for 49th.

The final Bronco was Hilaire Fouts who turned in scores of 86 and 84.

"What we are doing this weekend is trying to achieve our goals," said head coach Polly Schulze. "We improved from our first round and we know that anything above 13th place will be a success."

One of the team's goals is finishing strong. In the first round, the team combined to go nine-over in the final three holes. In the second round, they had cut that to even par. "That's a great improvement," said Schulze.

Santa Clara will look to continue their success into the final round of the Spartan Invitational. The 54-hole tournament concludes tomorrow with 18 holes.
