Santa Clara Women's Golf Participating in Upcoming West Regional Preview

March 28, 2008

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The Santa Clara women's golf team will be heading to Sacramento State this coming week to play in the NCAA Western Regional Preview. The tournament will play from Monday, March 31 through Tuesday, April 1. It will be the final tournament of the season for the Broncos before the WCC Championships two weeks after that.

Last week the team took second place at the UCSC Spring Ivite. Senior Corey Utsurogi led the way for the team with two rounds of 78 to finish twelve-over for the tournament and just one shot off the winner. Jenny Nelson had a strong showing, placing fourth with a score of +17, followed closely by Erin Sullivan who tied for fifth with a final score of +21. Hilaire Fouts charted a top-ten finish after being tied for third after the first round of 80. Her second round of 88 moved her to tenth place and a final score of +24. Right on her heels was Katie Sharpe in 11th at +25. Jamie Nonaka clocked in at +27 and in 13th.

This week's lineup will consist of Miki Ueoka, Utsurogi, Nelson, Sharpe, and Sullivan. Nonaka and Fouts will be playing as individuals.

"This is a very tough field as it consists of most of the top teams in the West Region," said head coach Polly Schulze. "As we have been in the past, we are ranked in the lowest portion of this field so our main focus is working on playing mentally tough and staying in the moment. If we do that we will play well. Where that puts us in the field will be a by-product. I am very glad that all of our healthy players are competing this week as it will give me a good idea as to who we will take forward in to our WCC Championship tournament."
