The Santa Clara women's golf team had one of their best starts of the year today at the Lampkin Cup Cal Poly Invitational, shooting a team score of 302 in the first round with their A Team.
Super freshman Miki Ueoka shot the team's first under par round of the year and currently sits in second place at -2, two strokes behind the new course record from the women's white tees that was set today.
"We've really been working towards winning a tournament, and we knew we had to shoot at least a 305 to be in contention," said head coach Polly Schulze. "We're just three shots off and I know that we can pull a team and individual victory out."
Santa Clara's A Team is tied with Cal Poly at +11 and three shots off of the favorite, UC Riverside. That team consists of Ueoka, Corey Utsurogi who shot a three-over 75, Katie Sharpe (78), Katherine Suarez (79), and Erin Sullivan (84).
The Bronco B Team contains Jennifer Sun, who shot a 75 and is tied for 11th with Utsurogi, Jenny Nelson with a 78, Jamie Nonaka (83), and Hilaire Fouts. The B Team is in 12th place out of 18 teams.
The Broncos will look to carry the momentum of their best round of the year into tomorrow's second round.
