Sullivan and Utsurogi Win Amateur Tournaments

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Two Santa Clara University women's golfers won amateur tournaments in their respective hometowns on Aug. 7. Senior Corey Utsurogi won the Santa Clara Women's Championship and sophomore Erin Sullivan won the Chicago District Association Championship.

Utsurogi, a San Jose native, captured her third consecutive victory at the Santa Clara Women's Championship. The tournament is a two-day, 36-hole stroke play tournament held at the San Jose Country Club. The Santa Clara senior has dedicated much of her summer to improving her golf game, and it has paid off in a tournament win.

"I am very happy that I was able to defend my crown," she said. "I played well overall; however I was not initially hitting the ball as well as I would have liked. My short game definitely helped me stay strong, though. I enjoy playing in these kinds of competitions because it keeps me in more of a competitive mode in the off season, so when the season starts nothing takes me by surprise."

Sullivan captured the Chicago District Golf Association Championship this week.

As for Sullivan's victory, it came at a one-day, 18-hole event at the Stonebridge Country Club in Aurora, Illinois, where she shot a 71. The Burr Ridge, Illinois native will be entering her second year in the Bronco women's golf program this fall.

"It was a great way to end my summer. I am really proud of the way I played and winning was a bonus," Sullivan said. "Both Corey and I won our tournaments, and I think that helped us prepare better for this upcoming season. I am looking forward to this season, and working hard to qualify for as many tournaments as possible."

The women's season begins on Oct. 8, in Boise, Idaho at the Boise State Bronco Invitational.
