UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - After the first two full rounds of play at the 2008 WCC Championships, the Santa Clara women's golf team sits securely in third place heading into the third and final round. Hilaire Fouts shot a first round of 73 to help put her tied for fourth after the first day.
Fouts one-over score in the first round put here near the top of the leaderboard on a day of tough conditions. Even after her second round score of 82 when the wind and rain picked up, she is still poised for a great finish, tied for fourth a +11.
Senior Corey Utsurogi and freshman Miki Ueoka aren't far behind, all alone in 11th and 12th respectively. Utsurogi had rounds of 77 and 80 with Ueoka posting a 77 and 81.
Erin Sullivan rounded out the scoring for the Broncos with a first round 85 and a second round 79 to lead the team. She is currently tied for 17th at +20.
Jenny Nelson finishes off the Santa Clara golfers with dual rounds of 89.
"Our goal coming in was to regain third place in the conference after it slipped away from us last year, and we are 16 shots ahead of Portland right now, so we're in good shape," said head coach Polly Schulze. "Hilaire had a great morning and the team played well all day despite the terrible conditions. I'm very proud of them and we're looking forward to tomorrow's challenge."
The Broncos will play the third and final round starting tomorrow morning. You can follow the action on live scoring on Golfstat here.
