The Santa Clara women's golf team finished the Lampin Cup/Cal Poly Invitational today, taking fourth place after sitting in second after the first day. Freshman Miki Ueoka recorded the best Bronco finish of the year, with a one-over second place.

"Obviously we weren't pleased with slipping two spots, but we shot two rounds under 310, which was a goal of ours," said head coach Polly Schulze. "We're doing the right things and trying to just let the outcomes take care of themselves."

Ueoka was alone in second place after the first round, shooting a two-under 70, the first under par round of the year for Santa Clara. She finished her second round with a three-over 75 to tie for second.

"Miki has been a great recruit, adding depth that we needed," said Schulze. "She is someone who can post a round in the low seventies or under par consistently."

Senior Corey Utsurogi also recorded her best finish of the year, shooting a team best 73 today to finish the tournament in sole possession of sixth place at four-over par. The two top-ten finishes by Santa Clara marks the first time in

"It's been a while since Corey has been able to put together back to back solid rounds like this," said Schulze. "She's been working hard to stay emotionally neutral and for her to do that was a big accomplishment for her. She got rewarded for her hard work.

Freshman Katie Sharpe posted two straight rounds of 78 to end up at +12 and tied for 22nd. Fellow newcomer Katherine Suarez finished in 35th after her round of 81 left her at 16-over par. Erin Sullivan rounded out the group with a score of 81, finishing 21-over and tied for 53rd.

For the B-Team, Jenny Nelson shot a very strong 74 to finish her first tournament of the year at +8 and tied for 13th. This was the first time all year that three Broncos have placed in the top twenty.

Jennifer Sun's round of 81 left her just on the outside of a top 20 finish. She ended up tied for 22nd with a final score of +12. Rounding out that Bronco squad was Jamie Nonaka (+27) and Hilaire Fouts (+29).

"We had a strong fall season with a lot of improvement and we're looking forward to the next part of the year," said Schulze. "I'm really proud of our entire team and the fact that they are staying diligent to our plan and committed to that is starting to show great results."
