SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball's Jose Vizcaino, Jr. has been named West Coast Conference Rawlings Baseball Player of the Week for May 4, announced by the conference Monday. This marks the third player of the week selection for Vizcaino, Jr., this season — he also took home the honors for the first two weeks of the year.
The junior shortstop went 12-for-19 (.632) with four extra-base hits, six RBI and eight runs scored between four games against UC Davis and Saint Mary's last week. He posted a .650 on-base percentage and a 1.000 slugging percentage for an OPS of 1.650. The La Jolla, Calif. native recorded three or more hits three times, including a four-hit effort Sunday to match his season high for hits in a single game.
Vizcaino, Jr. opened the scoring in an 8-7 victory Saturday over the Gaels with an RBI double in the first inning. He also singled to lead off the ninth, in which the Broncos scored three runs to erase a 7-5 deficit and even the series. On Sunday, the junior once again drove in the game's first runs on a two-RBI double to right center field in third inning. He added an RBI triple in the seventh and tied the game 6-6 with an RBI single in the top of the ninth, finishing the game a home run shy of the cycle. He recorded five putouts and eight assists as part of a 1.000 fielding percentage in 35 innings at shortstop.
Bronco baseball travels to Sunken Diamond for a 5:30 p.m. matchup with Stanford on Tuesday before continuing conference play this weekend at Portland.
