Four Baseball Players Receive All-WCC Honors; Vizcaino, Jr. Named to First Team

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Santa Clara baseball has been recognized with four All-West Coast Conference honors, announced by the WCC Tuesday. Junior shortstop Jose Vizcaino, Jr. has been named First Team All-WCC, junior right-hander Reece Karalus and sophomore catcher Stevie Berman received Second Team All-WCC honors, and redshirt freshman right-hander Mitchell White was named to the conference's All-Freshman team.

The teams and major award winners are voted on solely by the conference's 10 head coaches.

FIRST TEAM ALL-WCC: Jose Vizcaino, Jr. – Jr. – SS

Vizcaino, Jr. posted a .335 batting average for the Broncos in 2015, and led the ream in hits (65) doubles (14), triples (4, t-T.J. Braff), home runs (9), RBIs (39), runs scored (43) slugging percentage (.588) and stolen bases (10). Vizcaino, Jr. earned First Team All-WCC honors as a sophomore in 2014 and was named preseason First Team All-WCC in 2015. He won three WCC Rawlings Player of the Week awards during the 2015 season — more than any other player or pitcher. Vizcaino, Jr. was also named to the Brooks Wallace Award Watch List this season.

SECOND TEAM ALL-WCC: Reece Karalus – Jr. – RHP

Karalus began the year as Santa Clara's closer, posting nine saves from Feb. 21 through April 7, including two conference saves against No. 30 San Diego March 22 and Pacific March 28. He moved into the weekend rotation in mid-April and posted a 3.00 ERA in 27 innings as a starter during conference play. The North Bend, Wash. native threw three quality starts of 7.0 innings and set a career high with 11 strikeouts twice: April 24 vs. Gonzaga and May 14 vs. BYU. He struck out 42 batters against six walks (7:1 K:BB) in 38.0 conference innings this season.

Karalus earned First Team All-WCC honors as a sophomore in 2014 and was named preseason First Team All-WCC in 2015. He was named to the NCBWA Midseason Stopper of the Year Watch List each of the last two seasons.

SECOND TEAM ALL-WCC: Stevie Berman – So. – C

Berman led the Broncos with a .336 batting average and .417 on-base percentage between 41 appearances and 39 starts in 2015. The Saratoga, Calif. native started all 27 conference games and hit .343 with 19 RBIs and 15 runs scored. He posted multiple hits six times, multiple RBIs six times and drove in 15 runs during Santa Clara's last eight WCC games — a stretch in which the Broncos went 6-2.

Berman earned All-WCC Freshman Team honors as a freshman in 2014.

ALL-WCC FRESHMAN TEAM: Mitchell White – RS Fr. – RHP

White took the mound more than any WCC pitcher during conference play by making 17 appearances for the Broncos. He stepped into Santa Clara's closer role when Karalus moved into the starting rotation, and finished tied for fourth with five conference saves — just one behind the three pitchers that tied for first with six saves apiece. The San Jose, Calif. native recorded either a win or a save in seven straight conference games April 26 through May 10.
