SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball released its 2017 schedule Thursday and opens the season against a reigning NCAA Tournament participant for the third-straight year. The Broncos host the Washington Huskies at Stephen Schott Stadium on Feb. 17-20 to begin the campaign.
"Once again, (associate head coach) Gabe Ribas has put together an outstanding non-conference schedule that will make us better every day," head coach Dan O'Brien said. "Not a whole lot of off days on that schedule, which is awesome and the way it should be when developing true toughness and a championship mentality."
Following the four-game series against the Huskies, SCU hosts the annual Jack Gifford Memorial Tournament on Feb. 24-26 to honor the late supporter of Bronco baseball. The four-team event features six games in three days between Santa Clara, Creighton, Michigan and Saint Louis.
The pre-conference schedule also includes four-game series' at home against Northwestern, at Oregon and at home versus Purdue.
"I can't wait to get after it with this group," O'Brien said. "We're going to be tough to compete against."
SCU begins West Coast Conference play at home against San Diego on Feb. 24-26. The team then plays San Jose State once before and after a three-game series at Portland on March 31 – April 2. After a series at Loyola Marymount and a trip to Cal Poly, the Broncos play six-straight games at Schott Stadium against Gonzaga (April 13-15) and San Francisco (April 21-23).
Santa Clara faces two Pac-12 foes before and after a series at Pepperdine on April 28-30. The team heads up the road to face Stanford on April 25 and then hosts Arizona, the runners-up at the 2016 College World Series, at Schott Stadium on May 1.
SCU has two-straight home series against BYU (May 4-6) and Pacific (May 12-14) before hosting its final home game on May 17 against Stanford. The final regular season matchup is set for May 19-21 at St. Mary's (CA).
Should the Broncos finish among the top four teams in the conference, they will play for an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional in the WCC Championships at Banner Island Ballpark in Stockton, California, May 25-27.
The Broncos will play in one fall exhibition game at Stanford on Saturday, Nov. 12.
