SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball announced the second member of its incoming recruiting class for the 2017-18 season, Anthony Boetto. The catcher currently attends Palm Desert High School and resides in La Quinta, California.
"I chose Santa Clara University not only because of the beautiful campus and the tight-knit atmosphere, but because of the way I was treated during the recruitment process," Boetto said. "I see it as a place where I can greatly improve my baseball abilities while furthering my education in the place I see best fit."
Boetto is next in a long line of collegiate athletes in his family. Boetto's great grandfather played football at Oregon State. His grandfather played football at Washington State and San Jose State. His great uncle also played baseball for the Broncos. His mother was a member of the track and field team at Cal State Fullerton while his father golfed at Cal State Fullerton as well.
Boetto has started 55 games for his high school squad between his sophomore and junior years. Before competing in Division 2 in the upcoming 2017 season, Boetto helped guide his team to a 24-8 (11-1 league) overall record and a trip to the CIF quarterfinals. His team went 19-11 (11-1 league) in 2016 and made it to the CIF semifinals. He was named the team's defensive MVP. He posted fielding percentages of .982 and .993 in 2015 and 2016, respectively.
"Tony is a really tough player with a knack for the big moment," associate head coach and recruiting coordinator Gabe Ribas said. "At the catcher position, we always look for leadership qualities and Tony has those in spades."
The 6-3, 200 pound catcher and team captain is also a standout in the classroom. He boasts a 4.4 cumulative GPA and has been a member of the honor roll in each of his three years at Palm Desert High School. He is also involved in multiple organizations on campus and is a youth baseball coach in his spare time.
"Tony has a very high baseball IQ and will come in and strengthen our catching corps right away." Ribas said. "There is no doubt that we are very fortunate to add Tony to the Santa Clara baseball family."
Our next future Bronco, Tyson Coleman, will be announced on Nov. 28.
