MORAGA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball led by three runs after three innings but St. Mary's used a five-run sixth inning to take a lead it would not surrender. Brett Rasso drove in three runs on the day and Kevin Milam hit a grand slam to lead the SMC offense to a 14-3 win in the final game of the season for the Broncos.
St. Mary's (37-19, 18-9) starting pitcher Drew Strotman struck out 14 Santa Clara (13-40, 9-18 WCC) batters in 8.0 innings of work. He allowed seven hits and three earned runs in his outing. The Gaels scored 11 runs in the sixth and seventh innings give Strotman all the run support he needed.
The Broncos recorded three singles in the top of the first inning to load the bases. They got on the board when sophomore John Cresto scored via wild pitch.
Junior first baseman Jake Brodt hit a two-run home in the top of the third inning to push the lead to 3-0. Freshman center fielder Andre Nnebe doubled right before being driven home on Brodt's seventh home run of the season.
The Gaels loaded the bases via a walk, double and another walk with two outs. After an RBI single they scored once again on another walked batter to make the score 3-2 in the bottom of the fourth. The Bronco pitching staff walked 13 hitters on the day.
SMC then took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning as they scored five runs in the frame. After Charles Zaloumis reached on an error and Joey Fiske was walked, Brett Rasso tripled to give the Gaels a 4-3 lead. SMC tacked on three more runs to end the inning up 7-3.
