SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball lost 4-2 at San Jose State on Wednesday. The Spartans struck for three runs in the first inning and held the Broncos scoreless until the ninth inning.

Santa Clara (5-19, 1-2 WCC) starting pitcher Bryson Spagnulo (1-3) was handed the loss. He walked four batters in the first inning and allowed two singles, resulting in San Jose State (10-14) scoring three runs.

The Broncos moved to the bullpen and threw 5.2 scoreless innings between freshman Grant Nechak and sophomore Alex Barden. San Jose State did add an insurance run with two outs in the seventh inning to push the lead to 4-0.

Zach Wallace earned the win for the Spartans, throwing three scoreless innings and allowing just three hits. Jaiden France then threw four scoreless innings allowing just two hits. Hilario Tovar threw the eighth inning and Joseph Balfour finished things off in the top half of the ninth. The Spartan pitching staff did not walk or hit a batter on the night.

Santa Clara recorded nine hits on the night but went 0-for-5 at the plate with runners in scoring position and 3-of-8 with runners on base. The Broncos had two runners on in the third and seventh innings but could not capitalize.

SCU got on the board in the top of the ninth inning after redshirt freshman Ryan McCarthy singled to right field and then senior left fielder Tyler Meditz hit his third home run of the season to cut the SJSU lead to just two but that was the end of the game's scoring. McCarthy and junior first baseman Jake Brodt were the only Broncos with more than one hit on the night.

Up Next: Santa Clara will head to Portland for a three-game series that begins Friday at 6 p.m. PT and ends Sunday.
