Steffens, Bono Selected on Day Two of MLB Draft

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Santa Clara baseball's Jacob Steffens and Michael Bono, both right-handed pitchers, were selected in the 2017 MLB Draft on Wednesday. Steffens was picked by the Chicago Cubs with the 885th pick in the 29th round while Bono was chosen by the Cincinnati Reds with the 947th pick in the 32nd round. 

This is the third straight year a Bronco pitcher has been selected in the MLB Draft. Steffens, a 2014 All-West Coast Conference Honorable Mention honoree, appeared in 18 games for SCU with 15 starts and threw five complete games in 2017. The Phoenix, Arizona native went 4-7 overall with a save and posted an ERA of 4.56 in 102.2 innings pitched. The team's top starter, Steffens finished third in the WCC and tied for 33rd in the nation with 101 strikeouts. Steffens ranked fourth in the WCC in strikeout-to-walk ratio at 5.05-to-1.

For his career at SCU from 2013 to 2017, Steffens made 63 appearances overall with 30 starts and 235.2 innings pitched.

Bono made eight appearances on the mound during the 2017 season seven of which were starts. He posted a 0-5 record with an ERA of 6.88. He struck out 21 batters in 34.0 innings pitched. The Clovis, California native made his last appearance of the season on April 9 before missing the rest of the season due to injury.

Bono made 22 appearances for his career from 2015-2017 with 10 starts and threw 53.0 innings.
