SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Bryan Crabb threw a two-hit shutout, limiting Santa Clara to three base runners before the Broncos were able to put two on in the ninth. Behind Crabb's performance, San Diego State cruised to a 7-0 win Sunday afternoon at Tony Gwynn Stadium.
The Aztecs (8-10) have now won back-to-back games to open the four-game series which continues Monday at 6 p.m. Jordan Van Hoosier went 4-for-4 and Brandon Meredith had a two-RBI double during SDSU's three-run third inning which put the Aztecs in front 3-0.
Meredith's double was the only extra-base hit of the afternoon. Of the 21 hits SDSU has registered in the first two games of the series 19 have been singles.
Santa Clara (7-9) entered the series hitting .347 as a team. Its two hits Sunday was a season-low. Ironically, the last time the Broncos were shutout was by SDSU on May 1, 2009 in the opening game of a four-game series at Stephen Schott Stadium.
The lone Santa Clara win in that series last season was provided by Alex Rivers (1-3), who was charged with the loss today. Rivers worked 6 1/3 innings, giving up nine singles and Meredith's double in the third. Rivers kept the score close. SCU trailed 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh when Cory Vaughn ended Rivers' day with a two-RBI single to extend the lead to six.
The Broncos will try and rebound Monday night when the series resumes at 6 p.m.
