Final Stats

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara had nine hits but couldn't overcome a six-run deficit after four innings, losing to San Diego for the second straight day at Cunningham Stadium 9-4.

San Diego (19-15; 5-0 WCC) saw No. 4 and 5 hitters Zach Walters and James Meador combine for five hits and drive in four of USD's nine runs. The Toreros touched-up Alex Rivers for 12 hits and benefited from four Santa Clara fielding errors.

Santa Clara (14-18; 1-6 WCC) drops four-games below .500 for the first time this season. Trailing 6-0 in the fifth, Tommy Medica hit a 2-RBI single off USD starter Sammy Solis and drove in another on a double in the ninth. Pat Terry had a career-high four hits, going 4-for-4.

Despite Rivers (3-5) striking out eight, the Toreros pushed in eight runs (five earned) before being leaving in the sixth. Walters hit a 2-run homer off Rivers in the first inning and Mike Ferraro had a run-scoring double to put USD up early.

Solis (6-1) scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs through seven innings. San Diego has now won five-straight against SCU dating back to last season.

The Broncos will try and win the finale and snap a three-game losing streak when the series resumes Sunday at 1 p.m.
