SPOKANE, Wash. - The Santa Clara University Broncos have won three-straight after sweeping a West Coast Conference series at Gonzaga University in Spokane. SCU won 6-1 in Sunday's finale. Tommy Medica and Curtis Wagner both homered in the seventh inning to give the Broncos a six-run lead and freshman right-hander Chris Mendoza provided eight strong innings on the mound.
Santa Clara (18-23; 4-10 WCC) has started a stretch of playing 10 games in 11 days by winning three against GU on the road. The Broncos will play at No. 18 Stanford University Monday night at 5:30 p.m., then host UC Davis Wednesday, Pepperdine University Thursday and rival San Francisco Friday through Sunday.
Mendoza (3-4) kept Gonzaga off the scoreboard through seven - retiring seven consecutive batters at one point in the middle innings. Mendoza did not allow a walk all afternoon and scattered five hits before GU hit a pair of doubles in the eighth to produce a run.
Gonzaga (14-31-1; 2-9-1 WCC) has lost four straight and 13 of 15 dating back to April 12. The Zags committed three errors Sunday and starter Ryan Carpenter (2-4) would take the loss, working 4 1/3 innings before Evan Peters' RBI-double ended his afternoon with the score 3-1 SCU in the fifth.
Designated hitter Pat Stover collected two-RBI on a fourth-inning double off Carpenter which initiated the scoring. Two unearned runs scored in the fifth and sixth before Medica and Wagner hit solo homers to leftfield in the seventh.
