STANFORD, Calif. - The Stanford Cardinal snapped a four-game losing streak by knocking off visiting Santa Clara Monday night 8-3 in a non-conference game at Klein Field at Sunken Diamond.
Santa Clara (18-24) was coming off a sweep over Gonzaga but could not keep the momentum going against Stanford, who scored seven runs in the first three innings to lead throughout. The Broncos used six different pitchers on an announced staff day.
The Broncos totaled nine hits. Curtis Wagner extended his hitting streak to 14 games. Geoff Klein and Ryan Rieger each doubled.
Stanford (22-17) dropped out off the Baseball America Top 25 this week after being swept on the road at Washington. The Cardinal avenged a 9-3 loss to SCU last Tuesday.
Dave Giuliani hit a three-run homer in the third inning off Rhett Nelson to put Stanford up 7-0. Nelson's freshman classmate Brock Simon (1-2) took the loss after allowing a three-run second inning prior to Nelson coming on to work in the third.
The Broncos are in the midst of playing 10 games in 11 days. Tuesday is the only day off for Santa Clara during this current stretch. SCU returns to the field Wednesday night against UC Davis at Stephen Schott Stadium.
