Santa Clara's Tommy Medica Named WCC Player of the Month

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Santa Clara's redshirt junior Tommy Medica was named a West Coast Conference `Player of the Month' as announced by the league office Monday. The preseason All-American and former USA National Team player - had a terrific month of March, hitting .403 (31-for-77) reaching safely in all 17 games and is currently riding a 19-game hitting streak.

He finished the month with 12 extra-base hits, including five homers and six doubles. Medica helped SCU to 10 wins in March, hitting third in a lineup that boasts the WCC's best offensive numbers. Medica is the WCC-leader with 33 RBI this season - 19 coming in March. He scored 23 runs during the month, slugged .701 and totaled 54 bases.

He concluded the month hitting three homers in two games and driving-in runs in seven straight. Medica doubled in three consecutive games March 23-26, had four hits at Fresno State March 9 and homered twice March 28 vs. Princeton.

Matt Hauser, San Diego
This month he made nine appearances, picked up five saves and is bolstering a 1.17 ERA and has a 1-0 record for March. For the month he allowed four runs to cross the plate, two earned, and only issued two walks, while striking out 10 in 15.1 innings of work. Hauser took home one WCC Pitcher of the week award after getting a save and win against No. 14 Rice. Hauser turned in some memorable performances this month as he picked up both a win and a save against No. 14 Rice as he allowed no runs on one hit in 3.1 innings of work. In Friday's win over Rice, Hauser picked up his third save of the season. Then on Saturday, Hauser picked up his first win of the season, as he allowed no runs on one hit in 2.0 innings of work. Then he picked up a pair of saves against No. 10 Coastal Carolina. In Saturday's win, Hauser was inserted in the seventh inning after CCU cut the Toreros lead in half and were down two runs with one runner on base and two outs. In Sunday's win, Hauser was inserted with one out and the tying run 90 feet away, and a runner at first. He threw one pitch and got the batter to ground into a double play to end the game and give USD the victory.

Mark Castellitto, Gonzaga
In 18 games, posted a .406 batting average (28-for-69) with 7 doubles, 1 triple, 8 home runs, 21 runs scored and 24 RBI...also slugged .884 and had an on-base percentage of .506...led the team with 6 multi-RBI games and had 7 multi-hit games including two 4-hit games and one 5-hit game...hit 3 homers and drove in 7 runs in 23-12 win over Utah Valley University...helped team post wins over Texas Tech, Bradley, BYU and series wins over Centenary and Utah Valley during the month...closed out the month earning WCC Player of the Week accolades with a .588 average with four homers and 13 RBI in 4 games last week... boosted batting average over 150 points during the month..hit all 8 of his home runs during the month.
