Men's Golf in Second Place Heading into Final Round

Sept. 19, 2005

LAYTON, Utah - The Santa Clara men's golf team teed off their fall tournament slate long and straight down the middle of the fairway at Valley View GC as they carded rounds of 287 and 283 at the Purple and Red Invitational. The Broncos' two-round score of 570 has them in second place behind co-host Weber State heading into tomorrow's final round.

Senior Eric Lillibridge will play in the final group tomorrow as he shot five-under for the day. He negotiated Valley View's large, fast greens and adjusted to the extra carry in the 4,000-foot altitude to card a two-under-par 70 in the first round. He followed that up with a 69 in the late afternoon to head into the clubhouse with a score of 139, only one stroke behind leader Dustin Pimm from co-host Utah.

Playing in the high altitude, right up against the mountains and overlooking the Great Salt Lake, fellow seniors Michael Nicoletti and John Colyar also contributed fine performances, as Nicoletti sits tenth on the leaderboard with a two-round total of 143 and Colyar stands at 147. Junior Jong Yoon is sandwiched between his teammates with a two-round score of 145. Sophomore Tim Lynch overcame a first-round of 83 to shoot two-under in the second round to help the Broncos move into second-place for the day.

"It was an astoundingly good performance, it was a course we had never played on and a tournament in which we had never played," said head coach Rob Miller. "These guys played great, they are a veteran crew with a lot of experience and it showed today."
