SAN JOSE, Calif. - It was bound to happen sometime, but two wins in three tournaments is still an impressive clip. The Santa Clara men's golf team continued their impressive fall season Tuesday as they took second-place behind Boise State in the 13-team field at the SCU Invitational at the Silver Creek Valley Country Club.
Tuesday's final round tested the field as only five players carded below-par rounds, with the day's lowest round being a two-under 70. Santa Clara's Michael Nicoletti and Jong Yoon led the Bronco effort as they carded a pair of 73s on the day, while the rest of the SCU quintet, Eric Lillibridge, John Colyar, and Tim Lynch all turned in scores of 75.
"The course played real difficult today as you could tell by the scores," Head coach Rob Miller said after the round. "But all of our guys shot 75 or below, so they all played reasonably well. Boise State finally had their day, we beat them at their home, they beat us at our home, and we beat them on a neutral course, so we figure we're 2-for-3."
Freshman Jonathan Keane, playing the final round of his Santa Clara debut, carded an even-par 72 to conclude sixth-place finish with a score of 217. Blair Myers, also playing for the second SCU team, finished strong with a final round tally of 74.
"Anytime you have a freshman come out in his first tournament and really play solidly like that for three rounds, you have to take notice," Miller commented on Keane's performance. "We're real proud of the way he played and definitely that bodes well for our future to have freshmen like that."
The no. 42 Broncos will enjoy next week off from competition and will travel to Kaneohe, Hawaii for their next tournament in two weeks. Santa Clara tees off in the first round of the University of Hawaii Fall Intercollegiate on Nov. 7.
