SAN JOSE, Calif. - After winning their first two tournaments of the fall season with final round comebacks, the no. 42 Santa Clara men's golf team struck in the second round today to hold the lead heading into tomorrow's final round at the SCU Invitational at the Silver Creek Country Club in San Jose.
Jong Yoon led all Broncos in the morning round as he carded a one-under 71 on the Par-72 layout. As a team, Santa Clara totaled 293 strokes in the first round, six back of co-leaders Loyola Marymount and Boise State.
Keeping with their newly-established penchant for stirring comebacks, the Broncos received three under-par performances in the afternoon session as John Colyar posted a four-under 68, Michael Nicoletti a three-under 69, and Eric Lillibridge a two-under 70. Yoon and Tim Lynch each shot 75 as Santa Clara rode a blistering 282 second-round team score to vault to a two-stroke lead over Loyola Marymount.
"They started their comeback early today," joked head coach Rob Miller after today's action. "We know that one through five they are strong and we know that we're gonna get four out of five good scores. We really haven't had a score over 77 all season and that's saying something through three tournaments. You can obviously see that the quality of play is spread around."
Santa Clara also fielded a second squad in the tournament, as four Broncos saw their first action of the season. Freshman Jonathan Keane made his Broncos debut with rounds of 72 and 73 to head into the clubhouse with a one-over-par 175, good for 12th place individually.
Mike Miller, Blair Myers and Garrett Logan also carded respectable rounds in their 2005 debuts as the Broncos were well-represented on the board today.
Individually, LMU's Brian Locke set the bar for all others as he shot an opening round 64 to tie the course record. He followed that up with a 68 in the afternoon for a two-round total of 132, five strokes ahead of second-place Graham DeLaet of Boise State. For SCU, Lillibridge, Nicoletti, and Yoon all stand at 143, eleven strokes off of Locke's pace.
As a team, the Broncos demonstrated their ability of having any one of their team members step up in any given round. With two titles already under their belts this season, the team understands the gravity of their new status.
"I think the guys went into this tournament knowing that they were going to be one of the top teams, and they expected to be among the top of the leaderboard," Miller added. "The four teams that are there in the top are the teams they were expecting to be contending with. Tomorrow will be a matter of who comes out and plays best in the last round. We've performed well in the final round before and we're hoping to do it again."
The Broncos will seek to bring home their third tournament title in three tries as tomorrow's final round tees off at 7:45 a.m. in a shotgun start.
