VALLEJO, Calif. - The Santa Clara University men's and women's golf teams combined for five top-10 finishes at the 2010 West Coast Conference Golf Championships. On the men's side, Bronco sophomore Cory Mehl fired the tournament's best finishing round, a 1-under par 71 to place fifth overall. Miki Ueoka led the women with a 76 Tuesday to place ninth.

The Bronco men entered the tournament ranked third in the league, feeling they had a legitimate shot at winning the team title, but just missed, finishing behind Pepperdine and San Diego.

"Kind of a frustrating day for us," said head coach Robert Miller. "We ended up using scores of 81 in both the second and third rounds. If we could have posted a 76 in those spots we could have won the tournament. That's how close the margin of winning and finishing third was for us."

Individually there were a number of positives, including Mehl who tied for the tournament lead in birdies (11) and teammate Scott Travers who placed sixth. Both are expected to be named First Team All-WCC players.

Senior Jimmy Cacho was terrific in the first two rounds and placed ninth. Rick Lamb was the league's top finishing freshman and is expected to be honored as the WCC 'Freshman of the Year.' Travers is also a strong candidate to be chosen as an individual for the 2010 NCAA Tournament.

"We should be really good going forward," said Miller. "Losing just one starter in senior Jimmy Cacho, we are going to keep building. Cleary we had the talent to win it but it just didn't happen for us today."

Held at Hiddenbrooke Golf Club in Vallejo for the second straight year, windy and wet playing conditions kept scores high through two days and 54 holes.

"It was windy and overcast today, but the conditions didn't seem to be as tough as yesterday," said SCU head coach Polly Schulze. "Our first round on Monday was not so great but we finished solid in rounds two and three."

Miki Ueoka and Tammy Surtees were both named First Team All-WCC players for their top 10 finishes at Hiddenbrooke. Jamie Nonaka, who finished tied for 14th was an honorable mention selection.

"With Pepperdine and USF clear favorites out here, being ranked teams, coming out with a third place finish was important for us," said Schulze. "We were just eight shots off a second place finish today. Consistency will be a key for us as we move towards the goal of challenging for spot in the WCC's top two."
