The Santa Clara women's tennis team will travel to Palo Alto, Calif. this weekend to compete in the ITA Northwest Regional Championships beginning on Fri., Oct. 19 and running through Tues., Oct. 23.

Bronco head women's tennis coach Ben Cabell likes to play in a lot of fall tournaments for a couple reasons.  "This tournament will present an opportunity to get a lot of match play early in the year," said Cabell. "There will be some very good competition with a number of Pac-12 teams playing.  These will be some of the best teams and players that we will see in the future.  This gives us a chance to get a lot of good matches under our belt and continue to built on the momentum we have started to create this fall already."

Katie Le will be one of the favorites to win the tournament.  "We think she will be one of the top five or six seeds with 120-150 people playing in the tournament," added Cabell.

Cabell pointed out that if seniors Kelly Lamble and Alex Zaniewski continue to play well they could receive consideration in the rankings.  Le was ranked No. 41 in the latest ITA national rankings.  "Kelly and Alex are right there and they are looking to add some more wins to get there, to be ranked," said Cabell.

Last weekend Santa Clara competed in the Saint Mary's Invitational with Lamble advancing to the semi-finals of the top flight of doubles and the quarterfinals of the top flight of singles.  Lamble's play drew praise from Cabell.  "Kelly had a really good tournament," said Cabell.  "Overall we did great at Saint Mary's.  It was tough with having a few players injured, but overall we did really well."

Lamble won her first two matches in the ITA Red Singles draw, 6-2, 7-6 (4) and 6-3, 6-2, respectively, before falling 6-2, 6-0 to Cal's Klara Fabikova, the No. 3 seed.  Lamble and her partner Maggie McGeorge won the first two rounds of the ITA Red bracket, defeating Washington's Elian Douglas-Miron and Grace Ysidora, the No. 4 seed, 9-7 in the quarterfinals.  The Bronco duo fell 8-2 to a duo from Cal, including Fabikova and Lynn Chi (8-2).

Nikki Wolny and Stephanie Skaras defeated Andrea Gomez-Carus and Olivia Boija 8-4 in the Consolation Quarterfinals, but fell 8-2 in the semi-finals to Cal Poly's Ane McPike and Sophia Bott.
