Women's Tennis Easily Handles No. 53 USD, 6-1; Host No. 40 Saint Mary's for Senior Day on Sunday

SANTA CLARA, Calif.— Winning five singles matches and the doubles point, the Santa Clara women's tennis team upset No. 53 University of San Diego by a score of 6-1 at the Degheri Tennis Center Saturday. The Broncos improve their West Coast Conference record to 4-1 and are now 8-8 on the 2013 dual season.  This is the first win for Santa Clara over San Diego, who holds the overall record against the Broncos 12-1.

On Sun., April 7, Bay Area rival No. 40 Saint Mary's visits the Mission campus to take on Santa Clara at Noon. A Senior Day ceremony will take place before the match and will honor the Broncos' four seniors, Jessica Agra, Kelly Lamble, Maggie McGeorge, and Alex Zaniewski.

"I'm really proud of our team today. This is one of the biggest wins in our program's history because we have never beaten San Diego," said Bronco head coach Ben Cabell. "This victory sets us up for a possible top-three seed for the WCC Championship Tournament at the end of April. Saint Mary's tomorrow will be an exciting match in addition to celebrating our four seniors during our last home match this season."

Against the San Diego Toreros (8-9; 3-2 WCC), the Broncos got off to a solid start on the doubles courts, winning two crucial matches quickly. At the No. 1 spot, partners Katie Le and Jessica Agra dominated Laura Claus and Anna Depenau of San Diego taking the match 8-1. Then duo Stephanie Skaras and Delphine Rouvillious took down Cara Brown and Marta Stojanovic on the third court, 8-4. The last doubles match went unfinished as the doubles point was already decided in the Broncos' favor.

Santa Clara carried its momentum into the singles competition, taking five out of the six individual matches. In addition, only one match went to three-sets, still ending in Kelly Lamble's favor. The senior battled back to defeat Stephanie Hoffpauir, 3-6, 6-3, 10-4.

At the No. 1 singles court, No. 28 Le topped the Toreros' No. 108 Laura Claus in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-1. Le took down the defending 2012 NCAA Singles and Doubles Champion No. 20 Nicole Gibbs at No. 12 Stanford on April 3, 6-7(1), 6-3, 1-0(8).

Sophomore Stephanie Skaras adds another highlight of the day when she defeated Cara Brown, 6-1, 6-2, improving to an individual four-match winning streak.

The Broncos look to add to their impressive 4-1 WCC record against No. 40 Saint Mary's Sun., April 7 at 12:00 p.m.
