No. 58 Women's Tennis Defeats Gonzaga, 6-1; Take on Portland on Saturday

SANTA CLARA, Calif.—The No. 58 Santa Clara women's tennis team topped Gonzaga University by a score of 6-1 on Friday, April 19, taking the first match of the Broncos' Pacific Northwest three-match road trip this weekend. Santa Clara moves on to its final regular season West Coast Conference match at Portland on Sat., April 20 at 11:00 a.m. The regular season wraps up at non-conference for, No. 70 Oregon Ducks, on Sun., April 21 at 12:00 p.m.

Against Gonzaga (9-11; 0-6 WCC), the Broncos (10-8; 6-1 WCC) gained momentum early as they took the doubles point, winning two of the three doubles matches of the day. At the No. 1 court, partners Katie Le and Jessica Agra defeated Katie Edwards and Kylie Peek of the Bulldogs by a score of 8-3. The doubles point was solidified with the 8-6 victory by Stephanie Skaras and Delphine Rouvillois over Alexandra Tallas and Franziska Koehler on the No. 3 position.

On the singles side, Santa Clara tallied five wins out of the six individual matches. No. 28 Le improved to a four-match winning streak as she won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0, over Katie Edwards of Gonzaga on the No. 1 court. Seniors Kelly Lamble and Alex Zaniewski also captured singles victories at the No. 2 and 3 positions. Lamble took her opponent Kylie Peek in two-sets by a score of 7-6(5-0), 6-4. Zaniewski defeated Samantha Polayes of the Bulldogs, 7-6(4-0), 6-0.

The final two wins for the Broncos came from freshmen Chelby Cooke and Rouvillois on the No. 4 and 5 courts. Rouvillois went to three-sets with Franziska Koehler after dropping the first 4-6. Rouvillois then battled back in the second and third, taking the win by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 11-9. Cooke breezed by Alexandra Tallas going 6-0, 6-2, on Court 4.

Next up the Broncos take on Portland on Sat., April 20 and No. 70 Oregon on Sun., April 21.

Portland

The Pilot's West Coast Conference struggles continue as the team fell to 1-4 with an 8-11 mark in the WCC after a 5-2 loss against Pepperdine on April 6. Portland hosts USF on Fri., April 19 before the Broncos on Saturday. The Pilot's lone WCC win comes from a 6-1 victory over Gonzaga on March 9.

No. 70 Oregon

Recently, the Ducks lost a 5-2 match at home on Sunday afternoon against No. 5 USC. The Ducks moved to 12-10 overall and 1-9 in Pac-12 play. Oregon has lost the last 9 of 11 matches after starting off its season very strongly. They have played for other WCC competitors and have come out on top in each of those matches. Santa Clara will be the Ducks last regular season match of 2013 before the Pac-12 Championships.
