Santa Clara, Calif.—The Santa Clara women's tennis team will travel to Berkeley, Calif. this weekend to compete in the Cal Winter Invitational and continue to prepare for its upcoming regular spring season. The round-robin tournament starts on Fri., Jan. 18^th and runs through Sun., Jan. 20^th each day beginning at 10:00 a.m. The Broncos will face opponents Cal, Saint Mary's, and Fresno State – all being ranked teams by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association – in its first away matches of 2013.

On Friday, the Santa Clara women will begin with doubles competition against No. 7 Cal starting at 12:30 p.m. At 2:00 p.m. the Broncos face West Coast Conference and Bay Area rival No. 42 Saint Mary's in singles. Points are awarded at each position to determine a singles and a doubles champion at the end of the three-day round-robin event.

The Broncos are coming off of their highest national ranking in program history at No. 51 last season and have an experienced roster after competing in four preseason tournaments this season. Bronco head coach Ben Cabell has made an emphasis in practice this month to play a lot of matches in order to achieve the highest level of match fitness going into league competition.

Along with Santa Clara's own, No. 26 Katie Le, the Cal Winter Invite singles field includes ranked opponents in Saint Mary's No. 64 Jenny Jullien and four ranked players from Cal, who won the Invite in 2012.  

All matches will either take place at Hellman Center or Channing Courts on the Cal Berkeley campus.
