STANFORD - The Santa Clara volleyball team brought the weekend to a close with a hard-fought three-set loss to seventh-ranked Stanford. The final set scores were 25-12, 25-16, 25-15.
The Broncos (6-2) were led by outside hitter Brittany Lowe, who posted nine kills. Libby Morrison and Taylor O'Brien each collected eight digs for SCU, while Tanya Schmidt registered two total blocks.
All-tournament honorees Lindsy Davigeadono and Anna Cmaylo had an impressive weekend. Davigeadono tallied 10 kills, 104 assists, 17 digs and 16 total blocks, while Cmaylo posted 25 kills, two aces, 15 digs and 16 total blocks.
The Cardinal opened the first set with a fast kill by Erin Waller, but the Broncos quickly tied the score, 1-1, on a tip from Schmidt. The score was kept close for the end five rallies until Stanford pulled away with a two-point edge, 5-3, on a kill by Alix Klineman. Yet, Santa Clara rallied back to tie the set, 5-5, with a well placed kill by Davigeadono and an ace from Lowe. However, Stanford responded with an 8-1 run that gave it a 13-6 lead. The Cardinal continued to push ahead and won the first set, 25-12.
Santa Clara earned a 2-0 start to the second set with a successful attack by Lowe and a Stanford error; however, the Cardinal knotted the score and took a two-point led on a solo block by Foluke Akinradewo, 4-2. The Broncos fought hard to knot the set again, but a 6-1 run gave the Cardinal a 10-4 lead. Lowe interrupted Stanford's runs on five different occasions in the set. The Broncos made a late run on points by Cmaylo, Nina Sevastopoulos and Lowe, but could not catch the Cardinal. After an intense and hard-fought rally with diving saves by the Broncos' Cmaylo and Morrison, Stanford earned set-point, 24-16, and then won on a kill by Klineman, 25-16.
Stanford began with a 3-1 run in the third set, but the Cardinal's run was brought to an end by Schmidt and Sevastopoulos, who posted back-to-back kills to tie the score, 3-3. The Broncos then knotted the score again, 6-6, on a block by Cmaylo and Schmidt. Yet, Stanford reclaimed the lead. Sevastopoulos brought SCU back within two-points, 12-10, but that was the closest the Broncos would get as the Cardinal took set three and the match,
SCU returns to action on Tuesday, Sept. 16 when the Broncos open their 2008 home schedule against the Hornets of Sacramento State. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Leavey Center.
