MORAGA, Calif. - The Santa Clara volleyball team faced a tough West Coast Conference setback Friday night against long-time rival Saint Mary's. The Gaels defeated the Broncos, 3-0, with final set scores of 26-24, 25-19, 25-19.
Senior Brittany Lowe led the Broncos with 13 kills, while Anna Cmaylo notched a 64.3 hitting percentage, 10 kills and three blocks.
The first set was a true battle from beginning to end as neither team was able to gain a true lead. SCU held the lead for the majority of the set, but as the score narrowed to 25, SMC did not back down. The Broncos held match-point at 24-22, but the Gaels rallied to knot the score and then win the set, 26-24.
The Gaels controlled the attack in the second set. Saint Mary's broke away from Santa Clara with a four-point run to make the score, 13-10. From then on, the Gaels never looked back and took the set, 25-19.
SMC then plowed through the third set after momentarily exchanging points with SCU. The score was tied 10-10 before the Gaels jumped to an 18-13 advantage. The final score was 25-19.
Santa Clara returns to action on Thursday, Oct. 30 against No. 15 Pepperdine. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in Malibu. The Broncos then battle the Lions on Nov. 1 at 1 p.m. in Los Angeles. \
