SANTA CLARA, Calif. - Led by the reigning West Coast Conference Player of the Week Anna Cmaylo, the Santa Clara volleyball team moved up three spots to a No. 20 ranking in this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA)/CBS College Sports Top-25 Coaches Poll, it was announced Monday.
The Broncos are one of three West Coast Conference schools in the top-25; No. 15 San Diego, No. 17 Pepperdine.
Santa Clara opened WCC play last weekend with a 3-1 victory over Loyola Marymount and a 3-2 upset of then-No. 15 Pepperdine. The Broncos are 10-3 on the season and 2-0 in conference matches. Redshirt senior Cmaylo led the team over the weekend with a 41.7 hitting percentage, four service aces and nine total blocks. For the season, Cmaylo and freshman Tanya Schmidt continue to lead the Broncos. The middle blocking duo are tied for first with a 37.1 hitting percentage, while Cmaylo averages 1.10 blocks per set and Schmidt registered 0.77 per set. Taylor O'Brien continues to lead the Broncos backline, averaging 3.42 digs per set, while Brittany Lowe is SCU's new ace leader with 15 thus far this season.
The Broncos made their 2008 debut in the national poll on Sept. 29, checking in at No. 23 after going 1-1 against then-No. 22 Long Beach State. Santa Clara began receiving votes in the first four week before jumping into the top-25 last week.
Santa Clara continues WCC action this week on the road against Portland on Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. and Gonzaga on Oct. 11 at 1 p.m.
