No. 21 Broncos Fall To No. 13 Toreros

SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Redshirt senior Anna Cmaylo led with 14 kills and four blocks, but the No. 21 Santa Clara volleyball team could not top No. 13 San Diego Saturday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The Toreros posted a three-set win with final scores of 25-22, 25-21, 25-17.

Alex Scoffone compiled a match-high 80.0 hitting percentage (4-0-5), while Lindsy Davigeadono dished out 29 assists and Libby Morrison collected eight digs.

The first set was a back and fourth battle from the very beginning. The Broncos and Toreros each had a turn at the lead but the largest gap they could create was two points. After being tied through the 20-20, a kill by Amy DeGroot began a 5-2 run that gave USD the 25-22 lead.

The second set saw a similar beginning to the first set. This time the Toreros broke free after the score was knotted 18-18. Ali Troost put San Diego up by one, 19-18. The Broncos held on and tied the score again on a kill by O'Brien, 19-19. After San Diego took a two-point lead, 21-19, Santa Clara responded with a kills by Tanya Schmidt and Brittany Lowe to knot the score, 21-21. However, four straight points from Torey Ellick, DeGroot, Troost and Jessica Nyrop gave the Toreros the 25-21 win.

In the third and final set, San Diego took an early lead and never relinquished control of the scoreboard. After the score was tied 4-4, Colleen Carlson registered a kill that began a 10-3 Torero rally that put USD up, 14-7. A kill from Ashton Basch ended the match, 25-17.

DeGroot led the match with 17 kills and Andrea Csaszi registered a match-high 17 digs. Carlson tied Cmaylo's match-high four blocks and Breanne Odgen had three aces.

With the win, the Toreros improve to 20-4 overall and move to 10-2 in the WCC. With the loss, the Broncos fall to 17-8 overall and 8-5 in the WCC.

The Broncos close out the 2008 regular-season on Friday, Nov. 21 against the Gaels of Saint Mary's. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Leavey Center. Santa Clara will honor its five graduating seniors - Nichole Clark, Cmaylo, Lowe, Michelle Luxton and Taylor O'Brien - in a pregame ceremony.
