Women's Water Polo Continues Streak Defeating No. 11 Indiana and CSU East Bay

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The women's water polo team continued their winning streak, picking up two more wins at home over No. 11 Indiana and Cal State East Bay. The team improved to 7-4 on the season. 

Up first, the Broncos faced the Indiana Hoosiers. The teams battled much of the first quarter, but off an earned ejection, the Hoosiers scored the first goal of the game. The Broncos earned their own ejection, which Ashleigh Bandimere fired into the back of the net, tying the game 1-1. The Broncos controlled the rest of the first quarter; with goals by Elle Surber and Julia Peters the first quarter ended 3-1 Bronco advantage. 

The Hoosiers came out firing to start the second quarter, scoring a goal to bring themselves back within one, 3-2. Surber answered right back to maintain a two-goal lead. Bandimere put in her second goal of the game, 5-3 Broncos. The Hoosiers got one past the Bronco defense in the final 20 seconds of the quarter, making it 5-4 Broncos going into half. 

Elizabeth Anderson scored, increasing the lead to 6-4. With another goal by the Hoosiers, Bandimere put in her third goal of the game to end the third quarter 7-5. 

The Hoosiers fought hard in the fourth and final quarter, starting off the quarter with a goal. However, with another goal by Anderson and solid defense by the Broncos, the game ended 8-6 Broncos for the upset win vs. the top 10 team.

In their second game of the day, the Broncos matched up against Bay Area rival Cal State East Bay. Anderson got the ball rolling, scoring the first goal of the game. Peters followed up with another Broncos goal. Halfway through the first quarter, the Pioneers put in their first goal, but Peters fired right back with another goal for the Broncos, to put them up 3-1. With another goal by the Pioneers and one from Cathy Cantoni, the fist quarter ended with a 4-2 Bronco lead. 

Surber scored in the beginning of the second quarter and Peters put in her third goal of the game, increasing the Broncos lead to 6-2.  The Pioneers scored another goal, making it 6-3 Broncos going into half.

To open the third quarter, Surber again started the Broncos off with a goal. The Pioneers put in two goals of their own, but with goals by Anderson and Bandimere, the Broncos maintained a three-goal lead.

To start the fourth quarter, Surber fired another goal into the cage, 10-6 Broncos. Anderson and Surber each had one more goal, lifting the Broncos to the 12-7 win over the Pioneers.
