PULLMAN, Wash. – Led by an opening-round 67 by Scott Travers, the Santa Clara University men's golf team out-played 11 schools and sits in fourth place after day one of the 2010 Palouse Cougar Invitational hosted by Washington State University.
Travers was just three shots off the lead after round one and
followed with a 1-under par 71 in the afternoon. Teammate Cory Mehl went
69-69 to also go 6-under for the day. Ronnald
Monaco (72-70), Bobby Monaco
(74-72) and Rick Lamb
(75-73) rounded out the SCU five.
"The conditions were really nice today, really warm out here," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller. "They had the course set up in a way guys could score. Tomorrow will be much tougher, pin placements tighter and the tees moved back."
Santa Clara (282-282; 564) is 12-under par as a team, just five shots behind the University of Idaho, who is in third.
"Our goal tomorrow is to finish in the top three," said Miller. "To be 12-under par as a group is a nice number. We will see how we do tomorrow."
