PALM DESERT, Calif. – Santa Clara's Scott Travers won his second collegiate event, capturing the individual title at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate at the Classic Club in Palm Desert. Travers fired a 3-under par 69 in final round play Sunday to finish the tournament atop the standings, spanning 102 players and 20 teams.

Travers birdied the last hole of the second round Sunday (play was suspended late Saturday due to darkness) and carried that momentum into Round Three, going four-under par through the first nine holes, allowing him to erase a five-shot deficit over UNLV's Kevin Penner.

Travers and Penner finished in a tie for the tournament lead and Travers was awarded the individual title by virtue of the tie-breaker (lowest final round).

"I birdied my last hole of the second round Sunday morning and was feeling really good," said Travers. "I was making a lot of putts that first nine holes; I was making everything."

"It definitely feels good. The hard work I have been putting in paid off, especially early in the year. I want to play up to 100 percent of what I am capable of. Today and this weekend I would have given myself a B+, so if I can put it together, that could be really special moving forward."

Travers is coming off a terrific offseason in which he won two California State amateur events. He is the reigning West Coast Conference 'Player of the Year' and a 2010 NCAA tournament qualifier. The Broncos were well supported, with family and friends of the program in attendance. Travers' parents were there to celebrate his win.

"This was a really tough field," said Santa Clara head coach Rob Miller. "We beat some teams that were ranked ahead of us in the rankings. We were just nine strokes outside of third. So being so close to the top was good for us."

Santa Clara was tied for sixth as a team. SCU received solid tournament performances from sophomore Rick Lamb (tied for 13th) and freshman Scott Lowe (tied for 34th).

"We are really targeting the next three events," said Miller, looking ahead to the heart of the spring schedule. "We have a really good chance to beat some top teams at Oregon's event and at San Diego State."

Santa Clara looks to continue its climb in the national standings next week at Long Beach State at the Del Walker Invitational at Virginia Country Club, Monday and Tuesday, March 7-8.
