IRVINE, Calif. – The last three California State Amateur champions are 1-2-3 on the individual leaderboard at the UC Irvine Invitational at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach.
After 36 holes, Cal State Northridge's Nick Delio leads the event at 6-under while Santa Clara's Scott Travers and Cal Poly's Geoff Gonzalez are tied for second at 3-under. Santa Clara is third as a team, nine shots behind Arizona, the overnight team leaders.
"Winning tomorrow is doable, but we are nine shots back so that puts some pressure on us," said SCU head coach Rob Miller. "This is a hard golf course, not a lot of flat holes … there's a reason just a few guys are under par."
The Broncos won the event in 2006 and 2008 and tied for first a year ago. Travers won his first college tournament at the UCI event in '08.
"I think we are shaking out the cobwebs a little bit," said Miller about his team's 2011 spring debut. "We are within striking distance, that's all we can ask for. If we have a good front nine tomorrow morning that could put some pressure on (Arizona)."
18 holes of final-round play begin early Tuesday morning.
