Shieh, Men’s Golf Ranked Among the Nation’s Best

BLOOMINGTON, Ill. – The outstanding start to the 2017-18 season by Santa Clara men's golf has been recognized by another national outlet.

Led by senior Hayden Shieh, the Broncos are No. 18 in the initial Golfstat.com ranking of the 2017-18 season, which was released Wednesday.

Shieh checks in at No. 5 on the Golfstat.com individual list with an adjusted scoring average of 68.42, followed by sophomore Matt McCarty who is 86th (70.59). Junior Derek Ackerman is No. 176 with an adjusted scoring average of 71.42.

Santa Clara leads all West Coast Conference programs in the ranking of nearly 300 schools. BYU is No. 29 and Pepperdine comes in next at 50th.

The Broncos, who were No. 16 in the most recent Golfweek team ranking, have one tournament win and a runner-up finish in two starts this season.

Shieh drained a 4-foot putt on the final hole to secure his third career individual crown and Santa Clara withstood a late challenge from Tennessee, ranked No. 25 by Golfstat.com, to hang on for the title at The Jackrabbit (Oct. 1-3), a 13-team season-opening event.

Santa Clara went on to claim runner-up honors to host Cal with a tournament total 24-under 828 at the Alister MacKenzie Invitational (Oct. 9-10).

The Broncos have two more fall tournaments. They play at the Visit Stockton Pacific Invitational in Stockton, California, beginning Oct. 26, and the Saint Mary's Invitational in Pebble Beach, California, Nov. 6-8.
