Women’s Tennis faces tough competition on day two of Saint Mary’s Invitational

Draws/Results: Saint Mary's Invitational

The second day of the Saint Mary's Invitational saw the Santa Clara women's tennis team face a tough challenge, but emerge with four victories Saturday.

A pair of Broncos will be in action Sunday, the final day of the tournament, which has featured players from Cal, Cal Poly, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Stanford, UC Davis.

In the B bracket of singles, fifth-seeded Nabila Farah will head to the semifinals after rallying Saturday to knock off No. 2 seed Ana Loaiza of Sacramento State 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Farah, who downed Parminder Kaur of Saint Mary's in the round of 16, will meet No. 7 seed Olivia Noble of Fresno State at 9:30 a.m. Sunday. The winner will advance to the championship match at 12:30 p.m.

Madison Clarke had a strong showing in the A singles consolation bracket, defeating Jelena Lazarevic of Portland 6-2, 6-2 in the first round before earning a bye into the quarterfinals where she downed Fresno State's Emma Wilson 6-4, 2-6, 1-0 (6). She goes to battle against Gaelle Rey of San Jose State in the semifinals at 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

"I'm very proud of (Farah) and (Clarke), who each won their singles matches," said head coach Ben Cabell. "They both played pretty well and I look forward to seeing them play again tomorrow."

The Broncos, who posted a 4-0 doubles mark and won three singles matches Friday, were unable to overcome some tough competition in the main draw of both the A singles and doubles bracket. Chelby Cooke and Daniella Silva were knocked out in the round of 16 in singles. Cooke lost to No. 8 seed Sybille Gauvain of San Jose State 4-6, 6-2, 6-2; and Silva fell to the No. 2 seed Melissa Lord of Stanford 6-1, 7-5. The duo of Silva and Farah lost 8-0 to the No.4-seeded Gael partners, Jana McCord and Jamie Pawid.

In one of the semifinals of the B doubles bracket, Pacific's third-seeded pairing of Viktoriya Dzyuba and Cristina Saenz De Buruaga barely squeaked out an 8-7(6) win against Cooke and Janet Liu, who were seeded No. 2.

"Doubles was tough," Cabell said. "They made it into the semifinals; they were tough matches, but I think we learned a few things from them."
