Women's Tennis Taken Down by No. 28 Fresno State

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Matching up against the No. 28 team in the country, the Santa Clara women's tennis team dropped one against Fresno State University (5-3) on Saturday, 7-0.

"The score didn't reflect it, but I thought we played pretty well," said head coach Ben Cabell. "We were a little shorthanded and even though we came up short, we gave a good effort and we know what we have to work on moving forward."

Santa Clara (2-3) lost the doubles point after the No. 18-ranked doubles duo of Mayar Sherif Ahmed and Rana Sherif Ahmed defeated the partnership of Nabila Farah and Daniella Silva 6-3 and Bulldogs Emma Wilson and Olivia Noble defeated Delphine Rouvillois and Elizabeth Stephens 6-0.

In singles, No. 26-ranked player Mayar Sherif Ahmed bested Chelby Cooke 6-4, 6-0.

Silva and Farah also put up a great effort, but both lost in tough three-set matches.

Silva won the first set against Rana Sherif Ahmed 7-6 (7-4) but dropped the next two sets 6-1, 10-6. Farah dropped the first set 7-6 (9-7), but fought back in the second to win 7-6 (7-4) before finally losing the final set 10-8 to take the defeat from Bulldog Galina Bykova.

The Broncos next match will be at Cal State Northridge at 2 p.m. on Thursday.
