Farah’s victory leads Women’s Tennis at Saint Mary’s Invitational

Draws/Results: Saint Mary's Invitational

Nabila Farah capped off the Santa Clara women's tennis team's successful trip to the Saint Mary's Invitational with a thrilling upset victory in Sunday's final of the B draw.

The junior, seeded fifth, reached the final by surviving in the semifinals against Fresno State's Olivia Noble, the No. 7 seed. Farah needed three sets (7-5, 1-6, 7-5) to defeat Noble and set up a meeting with top-seeded Radina Dimitrova from Portland. Farah swept Dimitrova 6-4, 6-1 to claim the bracket of 32.

"I think it was a very good start," said Farah. "There were so many long matches for the first tournament … being the first tournament, I was very tired. Madison (Clarke) also did a very good job in her matches."

In the semifinals of the consolation A singles bracket, Clarke dispatched Gaelle Rey of San Jose State 7-5, 6-1, but the freshman did not play in final against Portland's Maja Mladenovic due to illness. She ended the tournament with a 3-1 singles record.

"For only her second college tournament, she played really well and had a really nice tournament," said head coach Ben Cabell.

The three-day tournament, which was played at the Timothy Korth Tennis Complex, featured players from Cal, Cal Poly, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Pacific, Portland, Sacramento State, San Francisco, San Jose State, Stanford, UC Davis and the Host Gaels. There were three draws of both singles and doubles.

The Broncos were perfect in doubles and won three singles matches on Friday, and followed up with three more singles victories during Saturday's action.

Santa Clara has the week off and then travels to Palo Alto, California, for the ITA Regionals beginning on Oct. 23.
