SANTA CLARA, Calif. – In a match that was heated at times, the Santa Clara women's tennis team squeaked out a 4-2 win over No. 39 South Alabama Sunday afternoon.

"That was a great win for us," said head coach Ben Cabell. "That's the highest ranked team we've ever beaten in the history of the program, so that's huge for us."

The Broncos (5-4) snapped a nine-match winning streak for the Jaguars (10-4) with the victory.

Doubles play came down to the last match, with Madison Clarke and Chelby Cooke downing Alexandria Stiteler and Monica Mitta 6-2.

Singles also came down to the last three matches, with the score knotted up at 2-2, whichever team won two of the last three was going to take the match.

"The girls did a great job competing today," Cabell said. "It was a true team effort from top to bottom today. I'm really proud of them, they deserve it."

After Clarke got a three-set victory over Laura Valkova on Court 2 with scores of 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, it came down to Nabila Farah's match on Court 4.

Farah defeated Michaela Meszarosova 7-6, 6-4 to clinch the match for the Broncos and send South Alabama home with a loss.

"It was pretty exciting, I was so nervous, even now I am still thinking about it and it's coming in," Farah said. "I was pretty nervous; I just wanted to close it. I didn't want it to go to a third set, but the environment (at Degheri Tennis Center) was amazing, so I enjoyed it."

She also mentioned that the team knew the implications of beating the No. 39 team in the country going into the match.

"We knew we had to give everything and we did," Farah said. "We pulled it off, so hopefully, the program will be ranked once again."

The Broncos' next match will be on Friday at 2 p.m. against UC Santa Barbara.
