Cross Country Posts Solid Showing at Roy Griak Invitational

ST. PAUL, Minn. – Santa Clara cross country had its men finish in sixth and the women in 12th at the Roy Griak Invitational on Friday.

Zach Litoff was the top finisher on the men's side in 18th place with a time of 25:02.7. Nicholas Russell (28th, 25:12.4), Ian Twyman (31st, 25:17.6), Jorge Estrella (49th, 25:43.8), and Harvey Chilcott (52nd, 25:49.6) rounded out the scoring for Santa Clara. Drew Burns and Spencer Fischer also ran. It was a personal best for both Twyman and Burns.

The Broncos finished with 178 points. BYU took home the team title with 34 points. Cougar Conner Mantz had the best individual time at 23:53.9.

"I was very pleased with our performance today," Santa Clara head coach Felipe Montoro said. "The guys executed our race plan really well.  We accomplished what we needed to. We will take some time to recover and get back at it at FSU and Bronco in mid-October."

On the women's side, JJ Escalera was the top finisher for Santa Clara at 22:31.4. Also scoring were Abbey Meck (57th, 22:33.4), Kinsey Hall (68th, 22:50.1), Maiya Fujiwara (101st, 23:33.0), and Katie Castelli (107th, 23:35.5). Irene Nagasaka and Adelaide Vergnolle also competed.

The Broncos finished with 387 points. Minnesota took the team title with 51 points. Cailie Logue of Iowa State was the top individual finisher at 20:57.9.

"The women did a great job executing our plan and race strategy, though unfortunately I think I missed the mark a bit on strategy which hurt us in a field like this," associate head coach Pete Cushman said. "Regardless the women ran tough and we got a lot out of this race, which will serve us well in October and November."
